Upgrading Your Display Technology With Direct View LED Positioning

Direct view LED is the next step for display technology

Display engineering is evolving at an unprecedented rate, and direct view LED positioning is vital with this type of display technology. Compared to other display technologies, direct view LED positioning brings superior reliability, image brightness and vividness, scalability and aesthetics. Because these display’s offer so much promise, direct view LED screens are already in use in video walls and are trusted in applications where visual impact is essential.

What is direct view LED technology?

Direct view LED positioning is a major move forward for display technology and offers several advantages over LCD display engineering. Where an LCD screen uses a layer of liquid crystal and LED backlights to create an image, direct view LED displays only utilize LEDs to produce imagery. AV experts have anticipated direct view LED displays for some time, but they’ve only recently been made possible with the introduction of smaller LED lights. Compact LEDs allow engineers to create higher resolution images, and proper direct view LED positioning relies on those. LCD screens may remain the dominant display choice, but the future appears to be one where LED displays dominate the market. The last hurdle is bringing the cost of direct view LED displays down to LCD screen levels.

What are the advantages of direct view LED technology when positioning displays?

Direct view LED displays perform better than LCD screens and older display technologies. What, though, makes direct view LED screens ideal for positioning video walls and other digital displays? There are many reasons, including:

1. Easy to scale up – Direct view LED screens are made up of tiny LED pixels, or clusters, of LEDs that combine to create different colors. These pixels are arranged one after another across the display’s face, and there’s no need for a layer underneath the screen. There’s no need for a bezel, either, so direct view LED displays can be built with seamless borders.

Because there is no need for a bezel, direct view LED screens can be scaled up with few limitations. Direct view LED panels can quickly be anchored to each other and tied together with power and data cabling. This approach allows for video walls of nearly any size or shape. Without bezels there are no gaps between displays, which can be distracting for observers. The result is a more impressive display solution.

2. Unbeatable brightness – Direct view LED increases display positioning options, in part because of the technology’s excellent brightness. Direct view LED displays are capable of incredible levels of brightness, even competing with direct sunlight in terms of intensity. Consider that the brightest LCD screens can output around 2500 nits, while direct view LED displays can produce 9000 nits or more. Brightness is essential for delivering the color vividness and contrast that people respond to, so direct view LED displays generate more compelling imagery.

Unmatched brightness is what makes direct view LED a viable exterior display option. Even during the brightest part of the day, direct view LED displays can outshine the sun and remain effective. Obviously, this means direct view LED is ideal for positioning interior video walls and displays, too. With this level of brightness, there isn’t a single interior application that direct view LED isn’t bright enough for.

3. Useful at a distance – Direct view LED screens can be built with extremely fine pixel pitches, which refers to the distance between pixels. The tighter the pixel pitch, the higher the image resolution, and vice versa. Pixel pitch is something that can be modified during display construction, so some displays are capable of very high image resolutions. Combine this with direct view LED’s superior brightness, and the technology is a winner from a distance. From hundreds of feet away, proper direct view LED positioning can still produce clear, vivid imagery and messaging.

4. Unaffected by ambient light – One of the primary alternatives to direct view LED positioning is a high-resolution projector. Projectors are capable of large images and high resolutions, but they do come with some considerable downsides. Chief among them is how projectors are adversely affected by ambient light.

This isn’t an issue with direct view LED screens, which are immune to glare and almost unaffected by ambient light. Where environmental light may wash out a projector’s image and make it impossible to see, direct view LED screens are too bright and vivid to lose their definition. This is another reason why direct view LED screens offer strong positioning options in any space.

5. Low maintenance option – LED lighting is the most durable form of lighting technology available, and it’s the longest lasting too. LEDs can last for years before they need to be replaced, and during that interval, most LED screens will only require basic maintenance. Even better, direct view LED panels come in small modules that can be quickly switched out, so if a panel does go out, it won’t come with significant downtime.

Direct view LED displays are built with solid state construction and aren’t just flat panels of glass. This gives the displays greater stability and durability, something that’s especially important for larger video walls.

Direct view LED technology opens up many positioning options for AV integrators and designers. It is bright enough to compete with the sun, vivid enough to produce memorable imagery, reliable enough to last for years and sharp enough to work at long distances. It is, in short, everything that people look for in their display technology.
