The Robert R. Shaw Center for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (often abbreviated as S.T.E.A.M.) is an interdisciplinary educational facility operated by Katy Independent School District (Katy ISD). Located in Katy, Texas (a large city in the Houston area), the Shaw Center provides space and specialized resources for inspiring and educating growing minds throughout Katy ISD.
In line with the facility’s focus on S.T.E.A.M., the needs of the Shaw Center demand an emphasis on technology, flexibility, and interactivity, as well as an understanding of how the facility is used. Data Projections was happy to meet these challenges.
The Shaw Center is designed for practical use and function. Several of the high schools in Katy ISD have a bay area in the facility most importantly to support their Robotics programs. In these spaces, students and instructors hypothesize, design, and construct projects before moving into a central shared collaborative space (the collaboration room) with other groups from different high schools in Katy ISD. Their students and educators can share their results and work together. The space is also used for competitions and other events.
Data Projections installed a video wall in the upper wall of the bay area for the display of presentations, websites, projects, and other relevant material. The video wall consists of four screens that may be used individually or in tandem, facilitating the varied presentation needs of the Shaw Center. In addition, the display contains an Apple TV with shared content, a Twitter feed for the center and its events, and a live video camera stream.
A Crestron panel and system control the wall, allowing for the smoothest interactivity possible for employees, instructors, and students alike. With this display system and its enhanced audio and video, the collaboration room is capable of effortlessly handling presentations of all varieties and delivering it to audiences of all sizes.
Flex Class Room
Per designs by Katy ISD, Data Projections installed six interactive projectors around a flex class room area. These projectors set the stage for collaboration between students, instructors, and employees. Like the video wall, each projector may be used independently or together, providing either collective use for a single image or independent image display among individual groups.
In addition, Data Projections efficiently maximized collaborative space by applying IdeaPaint to walls in the collaboration room, transforming each wall space into a fully functioning dry erase board.
Data Projections was—and remains—proud to play a role in promoting the interest and future success of students interested in S.T.E.A.M. By way of state-of-the-art presentation equipment and technologies, Data Projections provided advanced solutions that go a long way in optimizing the center’s impressive space. With these facility enhancements, Katy ISD students, instructors, and employees alike will have a much easier time learning and creating, which will help to ignite great accomplishments in the future.
